Treat Your Skin Right This Winter
I used to think people who loved winter were a myth, like unicorns or centaurs or some other equally crazy creature. Well, apparently – they’re real. I think it’s weird and deranged, but who am I to judge?
I’m sure you winter lovers out there are shaking your fists at the screen. Winter is awesome! I bet you’re thinking. You can skate, ski, snowshoe, and have all kinds of frigid fun. Let’s just agree to disagree. Because even if you love winter, your skin doesn't.
And if you’re not a winter lover (what I like to call a “normal person”) don’t think for a second that your skin is spared. Indoor heating seriously dries out the skin. So, even if you’re curled up at home under a mountain of blankets, your skin is still suffering.
Here are some winter skincare tips to keep your complexion dewy, plump, and healthy when the weather outside is frightful.
Pull Out The Gloves
Compared with most parts of the body, the skin on your hands is thinner and has fewer oil glands [i]. Double whammy. Because of this, your hands require extra attention during winter to prevent dry, cracked skin, eczema, or premature aging. Luckily, there’s a simple solution: gloves. By wearing gloves, you protect the skin on your hands from the unforgiving winds and cold temps. Gloves also lock in moisture to keep skin hydrated and healthy. Plus, they’re super cozy and cute!Defy the Dry: Humidify!
Indoor heating systems (using oil, wood, or electricity) parch the skin [i]. Humidifiers put moisture back into the air, which stops your skin from getting itchy, flaky, or dehydrated. The benefits don’t stop there: humidifiers are also helpful for treating dry lips (smooch away!), stuffy sinuses, and scratchy throats. This simple change will make your toasty nights in much more comfortable – and better for your skin!
Sleep in Style
I’m sure you’ve all heard it before: sleep is very important for your skin (gotta get your full eight hours, folks!). While that’s true, you might not realize that what you sleep in is also very important for the health and beauty of your skin. Look for sheets and sleepwear in natural fibres like cotton, silk (ooh, fancy!), linen, and cashmere [ii].
Pro-tip: Avoid blends of cotton and synthetic fibres as they can be abrasive and irritating for the skin [iii].
Then, snuggle up and recharge!
